Who this is for
Your store runs on Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce. The platform is capable; the bill is not. Hosting that needs real sizing, security patches every few weeks, extension conflicts after each upgrade, a developer on retainer to keep it standing. You have looked at what the next version upgrade would cost and asked the obvious question: if we are paying for a rebuild anyway, why not move to a platform that is hosted, patched and fast out of the box?
This page is for the store owner or ecommerce manager who has reached that question and wants a straight answer with a price on it.
What moves, and how
Magento stores keep data in places that generic migration tools miss. The table below is the actual mapping we work through for every store.
| In Magento | In Shopify | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Simple products | Products | Direct |
| Configurable products | Products with variants | Up to 100 variants, 3 options; larger ones split or handled by app |
| Grouped and bundle products | Shopify bundles or app | Decided per product in the scope |
| Virtual and downloadable products | Products with digital delivery app | Files re-uploaded |
| Categories (tree) | Collections (flat, with menu) | Hierarchy kept in navigation; automated collections where rules exist |
| Attributes and attribute sets | Metafields with definitions, tags, options | Filterable attributes become Search & Discovery filters |
| Customers and addresses | Customers | Passwords reset on first login |
| Customer groups | Tags, or B2B companies on Plus | Group pricing becomes B2B catalogs or discount rules |
| Orders, invoices, shipments | Historical orders | Read-only, attached to customers |
| CMS pages and blocks | Pages and sections | Blocks become theme sections or metaobjects |
| Store views | Markets or separate stores | Currencies and languages via Markets |
| URL keys and rewrites | 301 redirect table | Every old URL mapped |
| Extensions | Native feature, app, or custom piece | Listed one by one in the estimate |
| Theme | Shopify theme set-up or custom theme | Decided from the design assessment |
The extension question
The honest difficulty in a Magento migration is the extension list. A store that has run for six years has twenty or thirty of them, and nobody remembers what half of them do. We read the list from your store, classify each one, and the estimate shows all three columns:
- Shopify does it natively. Most SEO, promotion, shipping-rate and checkout extensions fall here. No cost.
- A Shopify app does it. Reviews, subscriptions, loyalty, advanced search. The app's monthly fee is listed so the new running cost is clear.
- Nothing does it; it needs a custom piece. Pricing rules specific to your business, a connection to your warehouse system, a configurator. Each is priced as a small private app, $600 to $2,000, and you decide which are worth keeping.
Stores regularly find that a third of their extension list is dead weight they can simply drop. That is one of the quiet benefits of moving.
What it costs
| Store | Fits when | Fixed price |
|---|---|---|
| SmallStandard Shopify theme, up to 5 apps | Up to 500 products, one currency, one language, ordinary extensions | from $4,500 |
| Mid-sizeCustom theme work, up to 10 apps | Up to 5,000 products, custom design to rebuild, a few integrations | $9,000 to $18,000 |
| Large or PlusB2B, multi-store, custom apps | Over 5,000 products, customer-group pricing, several store views, ERP or PIM connections | $18,000 to $35,000 |
| Custom piecePer extension with no Shopify equivalent | Private app rebuilding one piece of logic | $600 to $2,000 each |
| Care planOptional, cancel any month | Theme and app updates, small changes, monitoring, a named engineer | $300 to $900 a month |
Everything in the tier price is fixed. The only variable is the custom-piece list, and you choose it. The cost page walks through three worked examples.
An example, end to end
2,300 products (410 configurable), 18,000 customers, 61,000 orders, 23 extensions
- Magento 2.4.6 on a $340/month VPS, patched by a retained developer
+ Shopify, hosting and patching included in the plan
- 23 extensions: 9 native in Shopify, 11 replaced by 6 apps, 3 custom pieces
+ 6 apps at $214/month total, 3 private apps built at $2,400
- Custom theme, 2019, 3.9 s largest paint on mobile
+ Rebuilt on a Shopify theme with the same design, 1.4 s largest paint
- 4,100 URLs ranking in Google
+ 4,100 redirects, sitemap resubmitted, rankings back within 3 weeks
How it runs
Free estimate (2 working days)
You give us the store URL and, if you are comfortable, a read-only admin login. We send a written estimate: catalog counts, the extension map in three columns, a theme assessment, the case for staying on Magento, a timeline and a fixed price.
Scope (1 week)
The full scope lists every mapping in the table above against your store, the custom pieces you chose, the launch date and the named lead. You sign; half the fee is paid; we start.
Import and build on a staging store (2 to 5 weeks)
Catalog, customers and orders are imported and checked against Magento counts. Theme set-up or rebuild. Apps configured. Custom pieces built and tested. You have the staging login from week one and a written log every working day.
Test and switch (1 week)
Test orders through every payment method and shipping rate on desktop and phone. Redirect table verified. Final delta import. DNS switch at your chosen hour; Magento kept available for rollback. Second half of the fee at launch.
Watch and hand over (30 days)
Daily checks of Search Console, redirects and checkout; fixes included. Admin training for your team, written notes, and the care plan offer.
Why us for a Magento move
We have worked on Magento since 2009, the year Magento 1 was finding its feet, through Magento 1 end-of-life and every Magento 2 release since. We know what an EAV export does to attribute data, why a store's URL rewrites table has 40,000 rows, and which extensions store their settings in places a standard export never touches. That knowledge is why the estimate holds and why nothing is lost in the move.
A Shopify-only agency has never seen the inside of the platform you are leaving. We have spent seventeen years inside it.

Questions people ask
Should I move to Shopify or upgrade to the next Magento version?
It depends on what the store needs. If you rely on deep B2B pricing rules, complex bundles or custom checkout logic that Shopify cannot do without heavy app work, staying on Magento can be right, and we will say so in the estimate. If most of your extension list is things Shopify does natively, and your cost is mostly hosting, patching and developer time, Shopify usually costs less to run and is faster for customers. The estimate includes a short section called 'the case for staying' so you can decide with both sides written down.
How are Magento configurable products handled?
A configurable product becomes a Shopify product with variants, up to Shopify's limit of 100 variants and three options per product. Products that exceed the limit are split by one attribute (for example by colour) or handled with a variant-expansion app; the estimate lists any product that needs this. Simple, virtual and downloadable products map directly. Bundles and grouped products become Shopify bundles or are rebuilt with an app, depending on how they are sold.
What happens to attributes, attribute sets and layered navigation?
Attributes become Shopify metafields (with definitions so they are filterable), tags, or variant options depending on how they are used. Layered navigation becomes Shopify's Search & Discovery filters on those metafields and tags. We go through your attribute sets one by one in the scope so nothing that customers filter by is lost.
Can you migrate order history and customer groups?
Yes. Orders import as read-only historical orders attached to each customer, with line items, totals and status. Customer groups become customer tags, or B2B company accounts on Shopify Plus where wholesale pricing is needed. Passwords cannot move between platforms, so customers set a new one on first login and we send the announcement.
Will my Google rankings survive?
The rankings follow the redirects, and the redirects are included in every migration. Magento URL keys, category paths, filtered URLs that rank, and image URLs are mapped to their Shopify equivalents with permanent redirects, the sitemap is resubmitted, and Search Console is watched for 30 days. Expect two to four weeks of movement while Google recrawls, then recovery. Shopify stores usually load faster than the Magento store they replace, which helps.
What about multi-store, multi-currency and multi-language?
Multiple Magento store views become Shopify Markets (currencies, languages, domains) on standard Shopify, or separate stores where the catalogs really differ. Translations move with a translation app. These are the items that push a store into the large tier, and the estimate shows exactly why.
How long does it take, and does my store go offline?
Four to seven weeks for most stores; three for a small one; eight to twelve for large catalogs or Plus. The Magento store keeps trading throughout. On launch day we do a final import of the orders placed since the first import, then switch DNS at a quiet hour in your time zone. The old store is kept available for rollback.
Who does the work, and who do I talk to?
Engineers in Ahmedabad who have worked on Magento since version 1, led by a named lead you will know by name from the scope. You talk to the lead, in writing, and get a short written log every working day. A US number, +1 512-937-2529, is answered in US hours.
